Dr Maria Montessori (1870-1952), the first female Italian medical doctor, was one of the most influential pioneers of early childhood education. Her ideas have become valued throughout the world and continue to influence mainstream education, e.g. Curriculum 2005.
Dr Montessori realised that children should be fully stimulated during the most formative learning years of their lives, from birth to six years of age. She coined the phrases, "absorbent mind" and "sensitive periods", when referring to this period in a child's life. She believed that all children are intrinsically motivated to learn and this forms the core of Montessori teaching.
Dr Montessori's method of education combines the above philosophy with a practical approach, based on the central idea of freedom for the child within a carefully planned and structured environment. The environment is non-competitive. Sharing and respect for others creates a co-operative atmosphere. Self-discipline and control are practised through self-discovery.
This is a truly international system of education that progresses with the times. It is equipment based and the materials are universal. Teachers undergo professional training to best guide your child's learning.
